When we first saw the trailer for Under Paris, we thought Jaws in Paris, we are in. And it was exactly what you’d expect it to be; a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Read more in our Under Paris review below.
What is Under Paris about?
It’s the summer of 2024 and Paris his hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine River for the first time. But the games may be in trouble when a scientist learns from an environmental activist that a large shark is swimming in the river. In order to avoid a disaster, she joins forces with the Seine River police commander to stop the event from happening.
Under Paris Review
This film has pretty much the same premise as the movie Jaws. Instead of the shark being on the coast of the ocean, she’s in fresh water in the river of Paris. In the film, a scientist, Sophia, has been studying the shark, Lilith. While trying to tag her, Sophia’s entire crew is massacred. But she notices something different about Lilith. Understandably, she quits her job and moves on from marine biology.
Years later, a teenager who think she knows everything, Mika, hacks Sophia’s tag information and notices that the tag is pinging in Paris. So, she notifies Sophia. Of course, Sophia warns the mayor and just like the Mayor Vaughn in Jaws, the Mayor of Paris refuses to stop the triathlon. It just shows how much some people put greed over the lives of others. And she’s a little over the top.
When Mika learns that Sophia and the police commander plan to kill Lilith, she interferes. What would you expect. She’s a know-it-all that takes everything too seriously. Instead of thinking about her safety and the safety of others, she has to “save the sharks”. Frankly, her character was a little annoying and it was satisfying when Lilith killed her.
Now, you may be thinking, sharks can’t swim in fresh water. Due to polluted seas, Lilith has evolved. What’s more, she is now reproducing by parthenogenesis. Meaning she doesn’t need a mate to get pregnant. Now, they are not only facing one shark, but hundreds of pregnant baby sharks. Of course, once the race starts, the blood starts to flow.
Despite the obvious flaws of evolution happening in a few years and over the top characters, it was still fun to watch. It’s not as serious as Jaws and not quite as insane as Sharknado. It’s a happy medium. If you like either of those movies, you’ll enjoy this film. Although a follow-up has not been announced, due to how the movie ended, we may see a sequel in the future.
Does Under Paris have an end-credit scene?
No, there are no mid or post credit scenes after the film. However, while the credits are rolling, there are cool backgrounds of rivers around the world traced in blood red.
