What is Transformers One about?
If you grew up in the 80s, you were glued to the television on Saturday mornings watching Transformers. In recent years, the transforming robots have been introduced to a new generation starting with 2007’s Transformers. Since then, it has spawned a slew of movies and television series including Transformers: Earthspark on Paramount+. However, no one knew the true story of why Optimus Prime and Megatron were enemies despite Optimus always calling Megatron friend. Now, we finally know the truth behind what happened and it is a great one.
Transformers One Review
Despite being a kids’ movie, it tackles the heavy subject of betrayal with emotional intensity. When we first meet Orion Pax, aka Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16, aka Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry), they are the best of friends. While Pax is a carefree spirit, on the other hand, D-16 is more of a stickler for the rules. D-16 doesn’t want to get into trouble, he does what he can to help his friend.
As the story progresses and they learn the truth of their society, a rift begins to form in their relationship. On top of that, their appearance begins to change. By the end of the film, they both transform inside and out. This is genius because you can not only see the change in their character, you see the change in their outward appearance.
The voiceover of Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 is great. The emotion in his voice as his character grapples with betrayal will leave you in tears. The person who looks up to him the most has destroyed him. At the same time, his friendship with Orion Pax is fracturing.
Thankfully, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127 provides some comic relief. Although he’s not officially named in the film as Bumblebee, one day he will be. But I love his nickname in the film, Badassatron. He’s the friend that wants everyone to get along and to be one big happy family. Just as with the other Transformer films, kids will love him in this one as well. Finally, the voice of reason is their old boss, Alita (Scarlett Johansson). Despite mostly being left out of the live action films, it was good to see Starscream and Soundwave. Bonus, we learn why Starscream’s voice is the way it is.
Visually, the animation is excellent. The backdrops are gorgeous and vibrant and really come to life. The cityscapes in Iacon City are reminiscent of films such Fifth Element and Blade Runner. On the other hand, the surface of Cyberton reminds you of old westerns. Even the creatures including the deer are beautiful.
Despite, the tone of the film progressively getting dark, it is fun reminder of why everyone loves the robots who are more than meets the eye. Although annoying at times, Bumblebee provides enough comic relief to keep the young ones entertained. It accomplishes what most of the live action films couldn’t, it has heart. You care for these robots as if they were friends and you feel for them as they tackle some heavy situations.
Previously, the film premiered in theaters on September 20, 2024. However, currently you can stream Transformers One on Paramount+.
What is Transformers One rated?
The film has a rating of PG for sci-fi violence and animated action throughout, and language.
Does Transformers One have an end-credit scene?
Yes, the film has both a mid-credit and a post credit scene. The mid-credit scene is more of a fun additive. First, in the scene, B-127, aka Bumblebee or “Badassatron”, visits his friends in Sub Level 50 and accidentally damages them. However, the post-credit scene is not so light hearted. With his transformation complete, Megatron announces his legion’s new name, the Decepticons. This leads to a good set up for a sequel.
