May marks the beginning of the blockbuster movie season. While there are plenty of action films to choose from, there are quiet a few family movies to keep the kiddos entertained as well. With the exception of one movie, the top movies in theaters in May are either remakes sequels. Which is not surprising since it seems like Hollywood is running out of ideas. But judging from the trailers below, they are all well worth going to the theaters to see.
The Fall Guy – May 3rd
First, the stunt community is the star in the film, The Fall Guy. Based on the 80s tv series of the same name, the film stars Ryan Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers originally played by Lee Majors. As a stuntman, Colt is hired by the producer of a film to locate a missing action star. However, things get complicated when he finds out the love of his life is directing the film.
Directed by former stuntman David Leitch, all the stunts in the film are performed by his production company 87North and McCormick. Expect to see tons of actions and record breaking stunts.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – May 10th
Taking place centuries after Caesar captivated audiences, a new story in the franchise continues in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. In the film, Proximus Caesar has risen to power after he misconstrues Caesar’s teachings. He enslaves other clans to do his bidding as he searches for weapons humans left behind to further his reign. However, one ape begins to question everything he’s learned when he meets a human. In this fourth installment of the film, it seems we can’t get enough of these majestic creatures. Judging from the trailer, the cinematography looks absolutely amazing.
IF – May 17th
As one of the only original films in the list, IF, will capture the hearts of both kids and adults alike. From writer and director John Krasinski, he created the film for his kids. In a recent interview, he stated that he was inspired by his wife, Emily Blunt, and his two daughters. As they create a “magical world” of their own, he wants their world to be a sanctuary for them regardless of the challenges in the real world.
In the film, Cailey Fleming as Bea and Ryan Reynolds as Cal have the unique ability to see imaginary friends or IFs. With so many IFs left behind, they attempt to reunite them with their real world humans who have either grown up or moved on. It is definitely a film that will tug at the heartstrings.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 – May 17th
One of the most disturbing movies made of all time gets a remake. The Strangers: Chapter 1 follows a couple staying at an Airbnb in a forest who are terrorized by unknown assailants. The three masked intruders seemingly have no reason for attacking the couple which makes it even more terrifying. According to the director, the relaunch of the franchise will be a trilogy. Simultaneously shot at the same time, the other two films will release later this year. With its release, this film will haunt a new audience of moviegoers.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – May 24th
In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the tale of Imperator Furiosa takes center stage. Initially starring Charlize Theron as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, we learn how she became to be with the Immortan Joe’s army. Now starring Anya Taylor-Joy, she journeys to find the place she once lived as a young girl, the “Green Place.” However, she’s not the only one searching for it. Biker Horde leader, Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) is hell bent on finding it for himself. As sort of a prequel and a sequel, it will be interesting to learn her story.
The Garfield Movie – May 24th
Finally, if you are a kid from the 80s, you know all about the lasagna eating orange cat, Garfield. While he hates Mondays, his favorite past-times are lounging and pranking his dimwitted best-dog Odie. Now a new generation will grow to love the lazy indoor cat as we did. In his new adventure, The Garfield Movie, Garfield (Chris Pratt) steps out of his comfort zone. When he is reunited with his long lost father, Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), he finds himself in a land he never wanted to be in, outside. Even though he is at odds with his father, he will need his father’s street-smarts to find his way back home indoors.
