A couple is terrorized by three masked strangers while staying in a remote Airbnb in the remake of a cult classic, The Strangers: Chapter 1.
What is The Strangers: Chapter 1 About?
First made popular in 2008, The Strangers has terrified audiences for quite some time. Originally marketed as “based on a true story”, the film was purely fiction. Borrowing from elements from the Manson Family Tate killings, Bryan Bertino created an original story. Using the premise from Bertino’s story, writers, Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, and Lionsgate relaunches the franchise as a trilogy in hopes of introducing it to new audiences.
Just as in the previous film, The Strangers: Chapter 1 focuses on a couple in a secluded location. This time, their names are Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez). Newly engaged, they travel from their home to the Pacific Northwest to begin a new life together. While driving across the country, their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon. Fearing they may not find help in the small town, they decide to book an Airbnb. Isolated in their temporary home, they become victims of attack by three masked strangers. With no rhyme or reason for the unprovoked attacks, they pull out all the stops to survive the night.
As director, Renny Harlin is no stranger to sequels. Under his belt are A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and Die Hard 2. In order to have all three films release in the same year, he shot the films simultaneously. Although challenging, he embraced the hectic film schedule. “On a Monday morning, I could be shooting the second chapter, and Monday afternoon I could be shooting the first chapter, and Tuesday morning I could be shooting the third chapter. it was incredibly demanding for the actors, for the continuity in terms of the make-up and wardrobe, and for my director of photography, because we wanted to create a visual language that develops so that the movies get bigger, more epic, as we go [on]. It just kept all of our juices pumping all the time”, he told Entertainment Weekly.
