The First Omen Review
The Servant’s Nell Tiger Free delivers a captivating performance in a film that rivals its 1976 predecessor, The Omen. Learn more in our The First Omen review below.
What is The First Omen About?
The First Omen is a prequel to the 1976 film, The Omen. In essence, it tells the story of how Damien, the antichrist, came into the world. As a baby, he was adopted by a wealthy family, but he has no back story. There is no indication of who his parents are or how he became to be adopted. The First Omen answers those questions. In the film, a young American woman, Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) is sent to Rome to begin her service to the church as a nun. She bonds with a teenage girl who reminds her of herself. In an effort to protect the girl, she uncovers a conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.
The First Omen Review
At first, we weren’t going to see the movie in theaters. Instead, we opted to see Monkey Man. Usually when there’s talks of a prequel or a remake, they aren’t very good, especially for older films. However, there are few exceptions like Ouija and Annabelle: Creation. After watching a few reviews, we decided to go see it. I’m glad we did.
Even though we know how it ends, the director, Arkasha Stevenson, did a good job of telling the story. Throughout the film, there was this unsettling creepiness that kept building until the very end. There were a few jump scares in the beginning, one taking a page from The Nun. But there were only a few. In addition, there were a few gory scenes, but not so much that it was a gore fest.
Adding to the atmosphere was the cinematography. A lot of the locations and scenes were eerily reminiscent of The Omen. In fact, there were a few scenes for example, when Margaret was walking down an alley, that was similar to the priest walking in the 1976 film.
To top everything off was Tiger’s performance, no doubt due to her role in The Servant. She carried the entire movie. She has this innocence that plays to her role as a nun. When we get to the final act of the film, it’s almost like she’s a completely different person.
If you like the original film and its sequels, you’ll enjoy this movie. Not only that, you’ll appreciate the nuances from the original. Even if you’ve never seen the original film, you’ll still love it was well.
Does The First Omen have an end-credit scene?
No, The First Omen does not a mid-credit nor a post-credit scene. The story was wrapped up pretty tight as it was a prequel to one of the most famous movies of all times. However, the very last scene of the movie could indicate a follow up film.
Currently, The First Omen is playing in theaters.
