The Flanaverse is growing and this time the anthology series is taking on the 1839 Edgar Allen Poe short story, The Fall of the House of Usher. The Flanaverse began with the Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.
His popularity really grew with his adaptation of the Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House. The show is hailed as one of the best horror series of all time. Flanagan then followed up with The Haunting at Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club.
While The Fall of the House of Usher has been adapted many times, Flanagan plans to put his unique spin on it. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way. It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul,” says actress Carla Gugino who play the character Verna, a demonic shape-shifter.
The show follows the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). He and his sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell), have successfully built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire. Soon children begin to die under mysterious circumstances. This brings to light past secrets he must face.
There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she (Verna) is the manifestation of that. You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma.
