As one of the most one of a kind artist of all time, Cyndi Lauper has made a name for herself with her iconic performances and as an activist. Now, a new documentary explores her remarkable life and career with the Paramount+ film, Let the Canary Sing.
What is Let the Canary Sing about?
The film explores her rise to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, her unique punk style, feminism and advocacy. She was truly a game changing star with a career that has spanned over 40 years. With iconic songs like “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, she has won Grammys, Emmys, Tonys and many more awards. In fact, with her first album, she was the first female artist to have four top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, she continued her success with the soundtrack for The Goonies and her second record “True Colors”. But her career is just one aspect of her remarkable journey.
Later, she began writing songs for Broadway winning a Tony for the musical “Kinky Boots”. She even starred in Celebrity Apprentice and did ads for the psoriasis drug Cosentyx while she continued touring. And her larger than life style and personality, goes even further.
Throughout the years, Lauper has gained notoriety for her charity work, in particular for the LGBTQ+ community. She even created the True Colors Tour that benefits the Human Rights Campaign and other organizations that provide support to the community including PFLAG. She is definitely an icon to be celebrated.
From her upbringing in a lower class Queens neighborhood, through her rebellious youth and her ascent to stardom, it covers everything. As well as chronicling her life and career, the documentary features interviews from artists such as Patti LaBelle, Billy Porter and Boy George.

Originally, it debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023. Now, the film will premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, June 4 2024. In addition, it will premiere on June 5 in the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Directed by award-winning documentarian Alison Elwood, it was produced by Fine Point Films and Sony Music Entertainment in association with Concord Originals. Other producers include Trevor Birney, Eimhear O’Neill, Andrew Tully and Alison Ellwood. Additionally, Lisa Barbaris, Gregory P. Cimino II, Esq., Tom Mackay, Richard Story, Rebecca Teitel, Sophia Dilley and Wesley Adams serve as executive producers.
