Godzilla Minus One Review
Initially, we saw Godzilla Minus One in theaters in December 2023. Then, Netflix added it to their library, so we decided to watch it again. Yes, it was just as good as the first time we saw it. First, let’s talk about the CGI. In this film, the visual effects team did an absolutely spectacular job in creating Godzilla. There’s a one particular scene when some guys in a boat have to distract him until the calvary arrives. Godzilla is swimming behind them and you would have sworn he was real. As a matter of fact, it was an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. However, there is one drawback. The scenes where Godzilla is walking on land seems a little choppy. It was almost like he was walking like a robot.
Equally important to the special effects are the characters and the script. In the movie, the humans in the film are just as important as the monster. Even though, the setting and storyline is a bit somber, it is a story of resilience. The main character, Koichi Shikishima, is a kamikaze pilot who abandons his orders. Naturally, he’s afraid of dying. However, he ends up on an island where he has to fight for his life when he encounters Godzilla. He has a chance to save the men on the island, but again he’s afraid and ashamed.
Once he arrives back in his home time, he finds it devastated. Many have lost their lives including his parents. He feels even more guilty than he did before. Struggling with survivors remorse, he ultimately finds a job. With a thief, Noriko Oishi, who caring a young child that’s not hers and co-workers from his job, they form a make-shift family. His relationship with Noriko is one of the most touching and heartbreaking relationships we’ve seen. Although not his wife and the child is neither of there’s, they epitomize what it is to be family.
In the midst of war, these characters are facing impossible circumstances. Each are flawed in their own way and have to deal with the emotional effects of war and rebuilding the city and their lives. Finally, once everything seems to be back to normal, Godzilla shows up. I can just imagine the emotional distress. At the same time, it shows the strength and the heart of people as they band together to protect the people and their town. If you haven’t seen it, it ‘s worth watching.
Currently, you can watch the film on Netflix or purchase or rent it on Prime Video.
Does Godzilla Minus One have an end-credit scene?
Unfortunately, there are no mid or post credit scenes after the film. Although, with the last scene, we could be seeing a sequel.
