Ishana Night Shyamalan is no stranger filmmaking. As the daughter of M. Night Shayamalan, it’s in her DNA. Recently, she worked with her father as writer and director of the critically acclaimed Apple+ series, The Servant. At age 19, she was the youngest-ever series writer/director. Now, she is making her feature film directorial debut with The Watchers.
What is The Watchers About?
Based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine, the film mainly follows Mina (Dakota Fanning). She’s an artist living in western Ireland. While driving one day, she gets stranded in a forest. However, this forest isn’t charted on any map. Mysteriously, each and every car that travels through it breaks down. Similar to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the cars stop working and electrical items go on the fritz.
While searching the dense forest for shelter, she discovers a concrete bunker. In the shelter, she finds herself in a room with a wall of glass along with three strangers. Evidently, she has stumbled into a trap. Each night, an electric light activates the glass wall so the humans can put on a show for unknown creatures. Although they can’t see what’s outside, the creatures in the forest can see them. As long as you follow their rules, you’ll receive applause. If you don’t follow their rules, terrible things happen. While the others are too afraid, Mina is desperate for answers. Despite the consequences, she goes in search to find out why the creatures are keeping them imprisoned and how to escape.
Who is in The Watchers?
Besides Fanning, the film stars Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan and Olwen Fouéré as the other captives. Other cast members include Siobhan Hewlett, Hannah Howland and Alistair Brammer.
What is The Watchers Rated?
The film has a rating of PG-13 for violence, terror and some thematic elements.

Originally opening a week earlier, The Watchers is set to arrive in theaters internationally beginning June 12, 2024 and in North America on June 14, 2024. Now, it is available on demand for rent or purchase.
