Learn how Amy Winehouse’s relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil inspires her to write and record the groundbreaking album, Back to Black.
What is Back to Black About?
Amy Winehouse is one of the most celebrated artists of her time. Her second album, Back to Black, gained international success winning her five awards at the Grammys becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys. At that time, she even set the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night.
But her personal life overshadowed her professional life. Winehouse struggled with substance abuse, mental illness and addiction. In 2011, her life was cut short when she dies of alcohol poisoning at age 27. Following her death, plans were made to create the biopic, however none of them progressed. When the right script came along, StudioCanal moved forward with the film and filming began immediately.
The film focuses mainly on Amy’s (Maria Abela) early years in Camden Town in London after the release of her first album. During this time, she meets and falls in love with Blake (Jack O’Connell). But their relationship is soon troubled as both are dealing with personal demons. Soon Blake reveals that he would rather be friends, leaving Amy heartbroken. It kicks off a difficult period of traumatizing events including her addiction and bulimia, the loss of her grand mother and dealing with the stress of fame.
Through it all, she gathers the inspiration to write the album that would change her life forever, Back to Black. Told though the eyes of Amy, we learn what inspired the deeply personal lyrics of her songs, the many layers she has within her and the love story at the center of it all.
