Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar
Explore the sour side of the wellness industry a true-ish story based on a lie in the new Netflix limited series, Apple Cider Vinegar.
What is Apple Cider Vinegar about?
Although the series has its foundations in truth, the story and the characters are fictional. It is inspired by the book The Woman Who Fooled the World by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano.
Set during the early days of Instagram, Australian wellness influencer, Belle Gibson (Kaitlyn Dever) claims to have cured her terminal brain cancer through health and wellness. If it sounds unlikely, it is. As it turns out, Belle has never actually been diagnosed with — or cured of — the malignant brain tumor that she shares with the world through social media, the mobile app she develops, and its companion cookbook.
At the same time, Milla Blake (Alycia Debnam-Carey) builds a platform promoting the power of food to fight cancer. The two influence their global online communities along the way as if it were true. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true. It’s about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down.
The series creator, Australian writer Samantha Strauss, lived during the height of Gibson’s real life success. She wants the series to serve as a cultural interrogation of the times. It explores the birth of Instagram, the allure of wellness culture, peak girl boss start-up culture, and the age of innocence on social media with very few checks and balances.
