The Penguin
What is The Penguin about?
In essence, The Penguin is like an origin story for Oz Cobb, aka Then Penguin. The events take place after Matt Reeves’ The Batman. While facing off against the Riddler, crime boss Carmine Falcone is killed in the process. As a result, there is a void to who will be his predecessor. As Oswald is concerned, it should be him.
The Penguin Initial Thoughts
Before we begin, there may be spoilers in this review. It’s kind of hard to talk about the show without revealing some of the details. With that being said, lets begin. The show is very reminiscent of The Sopranos. It has a mobster-ish flare that makes it feel less like a comic book adaptation similar to The Batman. While my husband didn’t like Reeves version of The Batman, I loved it.
At any rate, just like the film, Colin Farrell as Cobb is unrecognizable. Usually, you can see the actor under all the makeup. But he does such a good job, you just can’t see it. From the makeup to his walk, he totally transformed himself. For example, during the questioning, the makeup looks so believable that you think it’s actually his body. He’s a tough contender for next year’s Emmy’s.
As for Cobb, his character is ambitious, but insecure. This is apparent within the first few minutes. With Falcone gone, the next person in succession is his son, Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen). Like most offspring, he is unfit to be the leader of the criminal underworld. However, Cobb is willing to be his right hand man. But Cobb kills Alberto for laughing at him for wanting to be more. In comes Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), Albertos sister.
Recently released from Arkham, she wants to sit at the top of the throne when she learns her brother is missing. Knowing Sofia suspects him, Cobb must make some moves. After trying to steal his hupcaps, Cobb spares a young man named Victor (Rhenzy Felix) and takes him under his wing. He uses him to help over up murdering Alberto. At the same time, he create an elaborate plan to use this mistake to pit the mod against each other so he can rise to power. It’s almost a dark story of being underestimated. And even though he’s a bad guy, your find yourself rooting for him just like Tony Soprano.
We can’t wait to watch the next episode. However, it’s a shame it’s a limited series. This could be a great void for fans looking for their Soprano fix.
Currently, you can stream The Penguin on Max. After that, a new episode will premiere on Thursdays on Max. Additionally, episodes will air on HBO on Sundays at 9pm EST until all eight are complete.
