We’ve been looking forward to this show. With Trinity from the Matrix franchise and the Squid Game guy, it looking intriguing, especially with a Black female lead. After watching the first two episodes, here are our initial thoughts on The Acolyte.
What is The Acolyte about?
The series is set hundreds years before the era of Luke Skywalker and his crew when there is peace in the galaxy. Given that, Jedi Master Indara is murdered. As an investigation into her death begins, Jedi Master Sol learns who the culprit is, his old Padawan. Although, he doesn’t believe it, Master Sol vows to learn the truth. As more clues emerge, he discovers sinister forces are at play.
The Acolyte Review
As said before, we were looking forward to the series. After watching Squid Game, we became fans of Lee Jung-jae who portrays Jedi Master Sol. We are huge fans of the Matrix franchise, so of course we’re Carrie-Anne Moss fans. After watching the first two episodes, we’re not sure how well the show will do.
According to the official description of the series, “they travel down a dark path where siniter forces reveal all is not what it seems.” However, there is nothing sinister about this show. It feels more like a Disney cartoon than a dark live action show. Overall, it seems a little cheesy.
Even though the main character was supposed to have the ability to defeat a Jedi Master, she was more like a Disney cartoon villain. Nothing against the actress, Amandla Stenberg, that played her, it has more to do with the script and the directing. In a recent interview, the director, Leslye Headland, described the series as “Frozen meets Kill Bill.” So far, the series is more Frozen than Kill Bill.
Even some of the scenes were like a cartoon. In particular, Mae straps herself in a seat as her ship crashes on a mysterious planet. When she wakes it, she jolts up like she’s just had a bad dream. Not to mention, she no where near the seat she was in and there is not a scratch on her. She should be close to dead.
At any rate, these were just the first two episodes. The show has the potential to be a really good show. Although, it doesn’t seem like it will be judging from the first two episodes. Hopefully, the show will get better with the next few episodes. There have been plenty of good shows that started off just okay.
Currently, you can stream the the first two episodes on Disney+.
