Fresh off the heels of their mini series, Manhunt, about the capture of John Wilkes Booth comes a new chase. Apple TV’s The Big Cigar follows the Huey P. Newton as he escapes to Cuba with the help of some friends to avoid prosecution for murder.
What is The Big Cigar About?
Based on the 2012 Playboy article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman, the series is a true story about Huey P. Newton’s (André Holland) escape. As the founder and first leader of the Black Panther Party, he founded over 60 community support programs including food banks, medical clinics, and more. The most famous of these programs was the Free Breakfast for Children program. In addition, he co-founded the Black Panther newspaper service which became America’s most widely distributed African American newspapers.
Despite all his accomplishments, in 1967, he was involved in a shootout which led to police officer, John Frey, being mortally wounded. Even though no gun was found on Newton, officers blamed him for the death of Frey. To elude the FBI manhunt, he enlists the help of producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola). They concoct an elaborate plan involving a fake movie production to aide in his escape. However, anything that can go wrong does go wrong. As you can see from the trailer below, it’s going to be one hell of a story.
