Parasyte: The Grey Review
When I first heard about the series, I was a little worried since its based on the events of the anime, Parasyte: The Maxim. Netflix has tried before and failed to adapt anime into live action adaptations. With show like Death Note and Bleach, they don’t have a good track record.
Instead of a complete remake, the creator went in a different direction. Set in the same universe as the anime, the events in the series coincide with it. It’s almost a continuation of what happened after. Their work paid off.
Lets talk about the main characters, Su-in, Jun-kyung, Cheo-min and Kang-woo. First is Su-in, the main character of the story. When she was injured in the in the car accident, she was fatally wounded. The parasite used her energy to heal Su-in, resulting from it not completely bonding with her. As a mutant, she may be the only hope for the human race. But Su-in has her own demons. She has deep personal issues in which she has almost given up on the human race. However, both she and the monster within her learn to figure out together.
Each of the other characters are dealing with personal issues as well. The fact that an alien parasite whose main function is to eat people, is the one who helps them. She’s sort of the guiding light for these characters, some of which whom have lost their humanity. By helping them to become more human, she herself is finding her place in the world. It’s quite an interesting, compelling story.
The only drawback is the portrayal of Choi Jun-kyung, the head of the task force. She comes off as more of a comic book character villain than anything else. In the series, a parasite took over her husband and almost killed her, making her a little crazy. So her performance in the beginning was a little like a mad woman. But she calms down some as she begins to trust the Su-in hybrid more.
In all, the cgi in the series was actually decent. The creatures transformed and moved just like they do in the anime and the story was captivating. Whether you are a fan of the the anime or not, you’ll enjoy this series.
Does Parasyte: The Grey have an end-credit scene?
None of the episodes of Parasyte: The Grey have mid-credit or post-credit scenes. However, be sure to watch the last scene of episode six. The series looks like it’s over, but there is a scene at The Grey’s headquarters. Anime fans will be pleasantly surprised.
