Monkey Man Review
For Dev Patel’s first directorial debut, he did an excellent job. The action scenes were so intense that you could feel the punches. Although some of the fighting was filmed with a shaky footage, it didn’t take away from the choreography. During one scene in a banquet room, there are a group of bad guys fighting the good guys. With the mix of fighting and imagery from Indian heritage, it’s worth to see the movie for that scene alone.
As well, the chase scene with “Nikki Minaj” was intense as well. We we were surprised that his character even survived. But it plays an intricate part to the story and somewhat of a transition for the character. It’s the beginning of his transformation from being a victim to embodying Hanuman.
As far as the story, it seems that his introduction to fighting could have been explained a little more. The film starts out with him fighting in the ring, but you don’t know how he ended up fighting or how he learned to fight. Although an integral part of the movie, towards the middle, the pacing slowed down too much. Besides that, you really feel for the character and want to root for him. As the movie goes on, you become invested into his transformation and his quest to avenge the ones he loves.
Over all, we loved this movie. If you like the John Wick style of movie, you’ll like this movie. The cinematography, the fighting choreography, the imagery of Indian heritage and the music makes for a great movie.
