What is Hotel Cocaine About?
Created by Chris Brancanto, Hotel Cocaine is the story of Roman Compte (Danny Pino). As a Cuban exile, he became the manager of the Mutiny Hotel in the late 70s and early 80s. Known as the Casablanca on cocaine, the hotel is the epicenter of Miami’s cocaine scene. With a flashy nightclub and restaurant, the hotel was frequented by Florida’s elite.
Among the elite are businessmen and politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians. Even though the hotel seems to be thriving, he does his best to keep it all going while fulfilling his own American Dream.
Creators, Brancanto (Godfather of Harlem) and Guillermo Navarro (Narcos), wanted to tell the story of the infamous hotel located on Biscayne Bay in Miami. According to records, the hotel was the first property with a private club. After opening the club many of Miami’s elite including musicians, athletes and celebrities flocked the hotel. But for all the glamour the hotel had, there was a dark underbelly. Under new ownership, the hotel gained notoriety as a drug den. For that reason, it became the preferred hotel of “cocaine cowboys”. Although not filmed there, the movie Scarface depicted the hotel and some of its events.
