What is Ripley About?
Based on Highsmith’s 1955 novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, the series is an introduction to her most famous character. Set in 1960s Italy, the series follows Tom Ripley. He is a grifter barely scraping by with an amazing talent. As a chameleon of sorts, he is a career criminal, con artist and serial killer who always gets away with his crimes. According to readers, Tom is a likable, but cold-blooded character. In the series, he is hired by a wealthy industrialist to convince his rich and spoiled millionaire, playboy son to return home and join the family business. But his introduction to Dickie Greenleaf’s leisurely life, “is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.”
Spanning across five books, this isn’t the first adaptation. Most notably, is 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon. While the 2-hour movie, only gives a glimpse into the character, the series has the potential to learn more about the character and motivations.
As far as cast, playing the protagonist is Andrew Scott. Rounding out the cast, is Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s girlfriend. Consequently, Marge is the only one who suspects Tom’s darker motives. Be that as it may, Tom continues his cat and mouse game to achieve his ultimate goal of taking Dickie’s carefree lifestyle.
