Jake Gyllenhaal punches up a remake in the adrenaline-fueled cult classic, Road House, this time set on the shore of the Florida Keys. Only to discover that paradise is not always what it seems.
What is Road House About?
Road House follows ex-UFC fighter, Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal). Due to his taste for violence, his UFC career has ended and he’s barely scraping by. While making money in an underground fight club, he is spotted by Frankie (Jessica Williams). She recognizes him from his UFC fighting days. She hires him as a bouncer to protect her bar, The Road House, from local thugs. But he may have bitten off more than he can chew. It turns out they were hired by crime boss, Brandt (Billy Magnussen) because he wants the land her bar sits on. To make matters worse, the stakes get even higher when Brandt hires Knox (Conor McGregor). The keys are proving to be more dangerous than anything he ever faced in the Octagon.
Released in 1989, the original film starred Patrick Swayze as James Dalton. Instead of the Keys, the film took place in a small town in Missouri at The Double Deuce. Although it was a critical flop, it later it became a cult classic in large part to Swayze. As a fan, Gyllenhaal wanted to honor the late actor who passed away in 2009.
I knew Patrick—we did this film Donnie Darko together, and he was always so kind to me. I just wanted to honor him and bring him with me. So I have a couple of different tattoos [in the movie] in honor of Patrick. When I put them on in the morning, I’d be reminded of the history of this piece and the origins of it, which was good to remember every day.
