With any fairytale, girl meets prince and they both live happily ever after. This is not average fairytale. Netflix has a new take on the term damsel in distress with its latest movie trailer, Damsel, starring Millie Bobby Brown.
Millie Bobby Brown is Elodie. To save the people of her kingdom, her father, Lord Bayford (Ray Winstone), agrees to an arranged marriage with the kingdom of Aurea. The marriage will help with supplies for their people in the future. In addition, Aurea, is in deperate need of a princess. To help her people, Elodie agrees to marry the handsome prince. This is usually where the fairytale ends. In contrast, with Damsel, this is where the story begins. What could go wrong?
Well, it turns out that the arranged marriage was a trap. As we can see from the Damsel trailer below, after marring the Prince Charming, Elodie is thrown into a cave. It turns out the royal family has a secret. They have an ancient debt to pay in which they must sacrifice a young maiden to the dragon. The cave contains a fire-breathing, blood-thirsty dragon. With glowing rocks and giant swords, she must use her wits and will to survive.
Alone fighting for her life in the depths of the cave, Elodie she must look forward. She learns what her strengths and weaknesses are. In doing so, she imagines everyone who cares about her, who believes in her and roots for her. She will not go down without a fight. Her goal is to survive and take revenge of those who came and died before her.
Along with Brown and Winstone, the cast includes Nick Robinson, Angela Bassett, Robin Wright and Brooke Carter. Voicing the role of the fearsome dragon is Iranian-American actor Shohreh Aghdashloo.
Elodie becomes someone so unbelievably different from who she is at the beginning. She becomes this woman that she didn’t know she could become. And I think that is a huge storyline that so many women and young girls will be able to relate to.
