Follow Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as they take ownership of the working class town of Wrexham’s historic yet struggling football club in Welcome to Wrexham.
What is Welcome to Wrexham About?
Obviously, we know Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds all to well. McElhenney is best known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mythic Quest. Reynolds has been in a slew of movies including Deadpool, Free Guy and Safe House.
The idea to document the experience came to McElhenney after watching the series Chef Table, Last Chance U and Cheer. In fact, McElhenney fell in love with the game while on the set of Mythic Quest. The “idea of promotion and demotion” intrigued him and put the idea in his head to purchase a football club. While he had “tv money,” he needed “superhero, movie star money”.
In light of this, he teams up with Reynolds to purchase a football club. Not only did they not have any experience running a football club, but they had never met in person. They decide on the Wrexham Red Dragons. At any rate, they begin the process. Wrexham is a working class town located in North Wales, UK. Their club is the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. Because the team is in 5th tier, the pair has their work cut out for them. The actors hope to improve the team and bring positive change to Wrexham.
The docuseries follows them as they try to turn the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. Together with the Wrexham staff and their Wrexham liaison, a plan is put into place to achieve their goals. From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, the show tracks the ups and downs, the high and lows and everything in between. It kind of reminds you of a real life Ted Lasso.
In season one of, McElhenney and Reynolds are learning the basics of running a football club. In addition, they improve the facility and make the necessary changes to improve the team. Ultimately, the goal is to promote the team to the National League.
